Get the Blood Pumping with an Insane Motorsport Experience

Do you like the feeling of adrenaline pumping through your veins and is having an insane motorsport experience on your bucket list? Well I bet you wouldn’t expect ‘insane motorsport’ and ‘Riverland’ to be strung together in the same sentence, but you know what, they were made to be together like cars and rev heads!

A few months ago I was searching the Internets for every possible experience in the Riverland when it dawned on me that the Loveday 4×4 Adventure Park have a range of events from obstacle courses (Dirt Wars Survivor) to weekends where you can practice your 4×4 skills.

What I didn’t know is that every month or so, a mob of professional insane motorsport enthusiasts set up shop to give you, the every day Jane (or Joe) the chance to live out your dreams of being Colin McRae for a morning.

I have always been a little bit of a rev head and when I was a kid, I was always excited when it rained at home because that meant we could go out in the Datsun and see how long it took us to get bogged. I am not an adrenaline junkie by any stretch of the imagination, but I do like the fast lane and I couldn’t wait to try this out! So I went and booked an insane experience for my partner too, because I know that roaring around legally in a car is his idea of fun as well!

The other Saturday morning we made the adventure to the Loveday 4×4 Park, which you find by heading south from Barmera along Caddy Rd until you feel like you are in the middle of the boondocks and then see the green welcome sign. Checking in at the Tavern, we signed in with Travis (pro sideways drifter), said hi to Tony (the visionary behind the park) and made our way around to insane motorsport central where our weapons of choice and race track awaited us.

The Insane Motorsport Experiences team of experienced and professional dirt drifters and high flyers ran through the proceedings for the morning, helped us suit up (safety first) and then it was ready to do some stylised drifting. Or in my case, stylised drifting, some contemporary 180’s and on one occasion missing 3rd gear and almost giving my instructor, Rob, a new king of insane motorsport experience! Sorry Rob!

The good thing about the whole experience was that in no way did anyone pressure you to hit the jumps and get as much air as possible, there were no expectations that you had to go flat out around the tracks and drive beyond your ability of comfort. The team were there to give you advise on how to drive so that you could get as much as possible out of your driving experience.

In the Subaru WRX, instructor Rob, was full of enthusiasm and frantic hand gestures to indicate when you should be breaking and when you should not be missing 3rd gear. I had flashbacks of learning to drive in my Datsun 120Y and was full of courage to take the corners the best I knew how. It’s funny how you feel completely safe to try things you never would any where else, the track, the harness and the instructor making you feel completely at ease and safe when intentionally trying to drift around corners.

By the 3rd lap I was getting the hang of it, then lost the hang of it and had a good old giggle.

Feeling pumped, it was time to hop into the driver seat of a contraption that I have only ever seen going flat out around the gnarliest dirt tracks and flying high over crazy hills at the Waikerie Off Road Enduro. I was in awe of the beast referred simply to as ‘a buggy’.

I listened to all the tips for driving the super charged buggy and I think I ended up over thinking the whole thing! I was worried that I was going to spin out around a corner in a way that would have been worse then spinning out twice and almost blowing up the gear box in the WRX. So poor Rob (different instructor, same name) probably had a nap while I was driving the buggy, but I still had a pretty sweet as time plodding along around the course.

Michael, of course was frothing (absolutely extremely excited) throughout the whole experience and after we each had a hot lap in the WRX and the buggy, there was so much energy pumping out of us that we almost opted for another drive in each! However, we settled to just come back and do it again another day.

Whether you are an experienced driver or just want to see what it is like driving something other than your normal vehicle, I highly recommend this experience. There is no other way to safely be a “legal hoon” and have experts sit next to you and talk you through each turn and when to break.
